What is what to do when ps5 freezes?

If your PS5 freezes, here's what you can try:

  • Wait it out: Sometimes the freeze is temporary. Give it a few minutes to see if it resolves itself.

  • Force Close Application: If a specific game or app is causing the issue, try closing it. You might be able to do this from the PS5's dashboard by highlighting the application and pressing the Options button on your controller, then selecting "Close Game" or "Close Application". If you can't access the menu you should try these steps mentioned below.

  • Restart the PS5:

    • Normal Restart: If possible, try to restart your PS5 through the user interface. Hold down the PlayStation button on your controller to bring up the quick menu, and then select Power > Restart.
    • Force Restart (Hold Power Button): If the console is completely unresponsive and you can't access the menu, press and hold the power button on the console itself (not the controller) for about 10-15 seconds. The console should eventually power down. Wait a few seconds, then press the power button again to turn it back on. This is similar to a hard reset on a computer. This will most likely cause data loss. If you still have an issue check out this Power Button Problems.
  • Check for System Software Updates: Outdated system software can cause instability. Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings to check for and install any available updates. Here is some more information about System Software Updates.

  • Rebuild Database (Safe Mode): This option can help resolve corrupted data that may be causing freezes.

    1. Turn off your PS5 completely.
    2. Press and hold the power button until you hear two beeps (the second beep will come about 7 seconds after the first). This will boot the console into Safe Mode.
    3. Connect your DualSense controller to the console using a USB cable.
    4. Select "Rebuild Database" from the Safe Mode menu. Note: This process can take a while, depending on the amount of data on your drive.
    5. If you get any errors check this Safe Mode Errors.
  • Restore Default Settings (Safe Mode): As with Rebuild Database, enter Safe Mode (see above). Choose "Restore Default Settings". This will reset all PS5 settings to their factory defaults, but it will not delete your games or save data.

  • Reinstall System Software (Safe Mode): This is a more drastic step and should be a last resort. It will completely wipe your PS5's system software and reinstall it. You'll need a USB drive with the PS5 system software file on it. You can download this from the official PlayStation website. The Safe Mode option you need is named "Reinstall System Software."

  • Check the Disc (if applicable): If the freeze occurs with a disc-based game, inspect the disc for scratches or damage. A damaged disc can cause read errors and freezing. Here is some information about Disc Problems.

  • Contact PlayStation Support: If none of the above steps work, there may be a hardware issue. Contact PlayStation Support for further assistance.
